The surge in demand for heat pumps is evident as grant applications have risen by 39% according to new data. Applications for government heat pump grants in January 2024 have soared compared to the same period in 2023.
The momentum for heat pump adoption remains strong, with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme experiencing its third-highest month for applications in its history.
Recent figures for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, released on February 29th, reveal over 2,000 applications for heat pump grants in January 2024, marking a significant increase from the previous year. This surge follows the government’s decision to raise heat pump grant funding by 50% last autumn, rendering the initiative among the most generous in Europe.
This news coincides with recent government statistics indicating the UK first major economy to halve emissions, achieving a 50% reduction between 1990 and 2022 while simultaneously boosting its economy by 79%.
Further analysis indicates that the average monthly application rate between November 2023 and January 2024, post-grant increase, has been 39% higher than before the uplift. As of January, the scheme has garnered a total of 33,424 applications, with over £133 million issued in vouchers to customers.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme plays a pivotal role in assisting households in transitioning from fossil fuel heating to cleaner, low-carbon alternatives by covering a substantial portion of the upfront costs for air source heat pumps. Prime Ministerial actions in October led to increased grants, offering up to £7,500 for the installation of air and ground source heat pumps, along with £5,000 off for biomass boilers.
Today’s released figures also provide a regional breakdown of heat pump installations in England and Wales, with the South West leading with 3,894 installations, followed closely by the South East with 3,886, and the East with 2,671 installations.
